Policy administration system (PAS)
A policy administration system is the system of record an insurer, MGA or broker uses to manage policies through their lifecycle, covering submission, rating, quoting, binding, issuance, endorsement, renewal and often billing.
Also known as: PAS, Policy admin system
Common systems in the US commercial market include Vertafore IMS, Guidewire PolicyCenter and Dayd ALIS, alongside a long tail of proprietary and legacy platforms. Most organisations have one, and moving off it is a multi-year undertaking.
This is why intake automation is judged largely on where it puts the data. A tool that extracts data accurately but leaves it in its own interface has moved the problem rather than solved it: someone still has to get the values into the system of record. The useful integration point is a structured write into the existing platform.
It also explains why integration status is a material buying question rather than a technical footnote. An intake system that cannot write to your policy administration system is, from an operations perspective, an incomplete product.
