VIN decoding
VIN decoding is the process of interpreting a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number to determine a vehicle's manufacturer, model, model year, body type, engine and other attributes used in rating commercial auto risks.
Vehicle schedules on a trucking submission arrive as spreadsheets, PDFs or inline lists, with inconsistent columns and frequently incomplete descriptions. Decoding the VIN yields authoritative vehicle attributes regardless of how the schedule was written, which both fills gaps and catches contradictions between the schedule and the application.
It is also a data-quality check. A VIN has a check digit, so a transposed character can usually be detected rather than silently accepted. Since a mis-keyed VIN can mis-rate a unit and cause a coverage dispute at claim time, validating at intake is materially cheaper than discovering the error later.
Reconciling the decoded unit count against the count stated on the ACORD application is a common source of early-caught discrepancies.
