DOT number
A USDOT number is a unique identifier assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to commercial motor carriers operating in the United States, used to track a carrier's safety record, inspections, crashes and operating authority.

For commercial trucking insurance, the DOT number is the single most useful identifier on a submission. It links to public safety and operating data, which underwriters use to verify what a broker has told them and to assess the risk independently.
An MC number is a related but distinct identifier covering operating authority for interstate transport of regulated commodities. A carrier may have both, and submissions frequently reference them inconsistently, so extraction has to distinguish between them rather than treating any number on the page as interchangeable.
Capturing these identifiers reliably at intake enables automated enrichment: once a DOT number is known, carrier profile, fleet size and safety history can be pulled and reconciled against what the application claims.
